Exhibitions

At Lorch Monastery, visitors can experience more than just the living spaces of monks. A permanent exhibition in the monastery church and the beloved mural of the House of Staufen in the chapter house present topics closely connected to the history of the monastery and its inhabitants.

The exhibition relates colorful incidents from 900 years of history. The choir books of Lorch, which were created in the Benedictine monastery's writing room in 1511/1512, take up a substantial amount of space. Here, visitors can admire high-quality copies of their magnificent pages. In their original size, they paint an impressive image of the colorful world of choir books and the monastery's heyday. There is also information about the writers and illuminators of the choir books and about liturgy and services in the monastery.

A modern masterpiece: the Staufer mural.

The mural of the House of Staufen in the chapter house

From 1998 to 2002, Lorch painter Hans Kloss worked on the circular piece which, measuring 30 meters long and 4.5 meters high, fills the entire chapter house. The circular panorama offers a temporal and spatial trip through the history of the House of Staufen: 250 years, from the father of the dynasty, Friedrich von Büren, to Konradin, from Hohenstaufen Castle to the Saleph River, from Lorch to Castel del Monte.

A magnificent display of history

The panorama paints a colorful picture of the Middle Ages: 1500 images of people, 400 animals, 120 cities, castles, and towns. There is much to discover: the Swabian landscape and its inhabitants, as well as exotic animals and southern plants, accompany the historical figures and events surrounding the House of Staufen in vivid detail. The painter used contemporary inhabitants of Lorch and the surrounding area as models for many of the figures—a special draw for local audiences.
